Let’s face it. Most of us are great at worrying. Navigating the demands of living in fast-paced Orange County, California can be stressful. But what happens when worrying gets out of control? When it becomes a daily intrusion? When you just want to run away and there’s nowhere to run?
Anxiety is a physical response, not a chosen one. When your brain senses danger, whether from a situation or a thought, it releases a cocktail of stress hormones. You begin to feel amped up and the fight-or-flight response is triggered. Signals are sent to your heart to beat faster, your lungs to breathe faster, your muscles to tense, your sweat glands to cool you, and the list goes on. Your brain screams “survival” to the rest of your body. Meanwhile, you feel horrible!
This bombardment of stress hormones makes your nervous system highly sensitized to stress. You are not weak or cowardly. You just have an overactive stress response.
Perhaps you have been caught in the anxiety loop, a vicious cycle of fear. You become acutely aware of the uncomfortable sensations of anxiety and you are paranoid of them. You’ll do almost anything to avoid anxiety. But everything you try makes it worse.
That’s because the cure for anxiety is very counterintuitive. What we think helps anxiety actually worsens it. Instead we need to face our fears with the help of some anxiety management techniques. By following my treatment plan, you can overcome anxiety.
Your recovery will depend on your willingness to experience your anxiety in a new way. This will result in brain changes that decrease or eliminate the anxiety. The good news is that anxious brains can be rewired by changing thoughts and behavior patterns. You can be free from anxiety, if you set your mind to it.
If you or someone you love suffers from anxiety and are ready to stop the worry cycle, give me a call. I would be happy to consult with you about your unique situation.
